ACARO / RAZORS IN THE NIGHT / DEATH RAY VISION / FURNACE / BEHOLD OBLIVION

At the Church 4/11

So this afternoon’s venue is at the Church in the Fenway and on the menu is a heaping helping of death metal. If you are unfamiliar with death metal, it’s a brand of music featuring low screeching vocals, metal guitars licks and heavy choppy drum rhythms. At times, it kind of reminds me of avant-garde jazz, … but only louder.

Its a typical rainy spring day in Boston and Mr. Slimedog has an interview scheduled with the Razors. At the moment its just me and Kat (my favorite Church bartender) hangin’ out and having a bit of a chat. Kat’s a bit tired since she worked last night and had to turn around and take this afternoon’s gig as well. There’s a small crowd forming around the bar as the first band sets up and begins their sound check. The crowd is made up of the usual dark leather garbed gladiators except for a small elderly gentleman dressed in a brownish striped business suit sipping a whiskey mixture and chatting up a few young girls.

And suddenly the first band starts playing….

The first band is Behold Oblivion and rolls out a very exciting brand of death metal featuring nice screeching and screaming mayhem. The band has lots of energy. The singer is a great front man with awesome vocals (its amazing he can still talk). He is very expressive and gets into it like an crazed warrior. I really enjoyed the set. Check out one of their videos below.

The second band is Furnace. More death metal with a slightly slower rhythm, but wait … they’re getting faster. They finally settle upon a vibe I like to call, “constant down beat death”. Check them out below.

The third band is Death Ray Vision and you know you’re gonna like a band when you even enjoy the sound check. The band is made up of members from other established Boston Bands. This is their 4th gig ever. They start playing and Wow!!! … and now for something completely different. Vocals are kind of like Rage in the Machine. They go through 3 different time changes in the 1st song. Nice buzz saw guitars. You gotta like it. I’m already exhausted after the 6th song. Simply awesome. They’re like the Yes of death metal. They start a song and it goes everywhere before it ends. Here a video below.

The fourth band is the Razors in the Night whom Mr. Slimedog will be interviewing later on. The Razors are definitely not death metal. They are a straight ahead, woohoo rock, hard core pop band. Sort of like a slow Black Flag. Carry On is a great song. This is pop punk, hard core at its very best. Dare I say with a touch of Irish punk and Beatles influences. Great set. Don’t forget to check out Mr. Slimedog’s interview and here’s a Razor’s video below.

Four bands down and several beers so it’s time to take a pee. I walk into the bathroom and step up to a vacant urinal to commence urinating. Although at times I get the impression that some guys actually seem to enjoy the social aspects of public peeing, elbow to elbow, with their fellow man, I’m definitely not one of them. I like to do my business and get out without too much fan-fare. Plus most guy bathrooms in bars are disgusting and its all you can do to get in and out without touching too many items or sticking to the floor. And God forbid you are forced to pee into a pot with old standing piss in it because the urinal wont flush (remember, never ever cross the streams).

So anyway, I’m taking my pee and notice a guy sidles up to the piss pot next to me. Out of the corner of my eye I notice grey curly hair and a brown striped business suit (I’ve seen him before). I’m not paying much attention, when suddenly, the guy pulls back from the urinal and starts muttering about how he has a pencil dick and can’t pee in the presence of others. I look over at him a bit quizzically and continue to pee. He then says how he can’t understand how it happened as all the guys in his family are really hung except for him. I’m thinking to myself, “Gee, this is a great ice breaker for a conversation”. WTF buddy, I’m just taking a piss and not the resident bathroom shrink. But then again, maybe its a good business idea. I mean, imagine it. As you step up to the pisser, a shrink greets you and guides you through the pissing process, remarking from time to time, what a wonderful apparatus you have and what a great job you are doing. He then zips you back up and says, “Now get back out their and knock em dead!!”. Give me a friggin’ break. I know a guy’s junk is a very important aspect of their persona, but unless the guy pissing next to you is looking for a quicky from behind he really doesn’t give a shit about you or your junk. Back to reality. I finish up, give the old guy a friendly smile and leave saying its a good thing he’s not in one of those bathrooms where you’re forced to pee into a trough elbow to elbow with about 10 other guys. OK lets get back to the show.

The fifth and final band is Acaro and immediately I notice that the lead singer reminds me of the doorman that works at the Church. But wait a minute …, he is the doorman that works at the Church. And then they start playing and everyone’s collective jaws hit the floor. The singer/doorman is incredible and so is Acaro. They have lots of energy. They kinda sound like Psychedelic hard core punk. Unbelievable vocals with a heavily drummed melodic hard core vibe. But the singer really makes the band. Check them out below.

Anyway, that’s enough for today. So take care and just remember two things: 1) check out all 5 of these great bands, and 2) if you see me in the men’s room, please don’t talk to me ….
