Art Show
Monica Mitchell / Brittany Gray / Amy Toxic
Emerald Lounge, Boston, MA 5/22/13
First, I must apologize as this show took place a few months back but because it was not an ongoing show, just one day, I felt no urgency to get it in on time. So it sat on the back burners, whatever that is, for a while, while I submitted material more timely and wasted time, wasted or not.
So without further ado- this was a three person, three woman art show at the Emerald Lounge on Stuart Street in downtown Boston. Oh, my! It’s a laid back disco lounge with a “business casual” dress code. Well, this is something different for me.
I ring up my partner in art preservation, the Robin to my Batman; on second thought I guess I’m Robin to her- Jess Punk, an artist, art enthusiast and punk show enthusiast as well. And we’re off to fight art crime in the heart of the city, to make the streets safe for expression and reflection once again.
It’s not too bad here, it’s not pounding disco and the music is not too intrusive. I got this invite on our events page just like I get invites to gigs from bands we support, we’d like to support the artists as well and, we encourage you to do so, also.
Monica Mitchell is one of the artists on display and yes, there is a musical connection. I notice a decorated music stand amongst her installation and find out she does play violin in bands. She has been a traditional artist working in drawings and paintings and has expanded to installations or conceptual art.
Today is an exhibition of a work inspired by the classic Spanish painter Velazquez and his painting “Las Meninus” which has young girls with large hoop dresses. Her piece is called “La Infant With Duct Tape” or “Baroque Legacies.” This is the painting that inspired her piece.

I couldn’t find any images of what she presented but it consisted of her making objects that looked similar in size to the hoop dresses but was decorated in a creative, wild way. I will say it was intriguing and I will leave her contact info here: monicamitchell@hotmail.com
And here is a link to her website displaying her work:

Brittany Gray was one of the artists as well. I recognized her name as a singer/songwriter on the local scene. I did not know she did photography but you can’t expect a slimedog to know everything. Actually, her display is pictures of dogs, mostly in black and white, some from Texas, some from Massachusetts, but always visually interesting. I have a few examples from her website and I’ll be a doggone if I don’t salivate at the sight of them.
Brittany’s contact info is:britegray@gmail.com and her website is

Last but not least on our list is Amy Toxic who was, in fact, covered in a previous art show review. There is a musical connection here as well as her husband, Will, plays guitar for the awesome hardcore band For The Worse.
Here she displays her fine and intricate drawings as she is a well-known illustrator and has designed many show flyers and album covers. Her expertise is only exceeded by her expression and emotion in her work.
More of her work and contact is displayed here:

As you can see, none of the artists displayed traditional paintings today- one was conceptual, one was photography and one was drawings but all expressed heart and intelligent reflection and were fun to experience.
I believe any way someone expresses themselves, whether it’s painting, drawing, music, writing- it’s all art and then you can decide whether their particular art speaks to you.
So check these artists out and see what you like.
