Cheech / Tenebrae / Words Of Truth / Line 131 / Creeps
Midway Cafe, Jamaica Plain, MA 2/28/15

Okay, so this is the second Saturday of the big thaw. The winter that turned all asunder under tundra. While we floated on icebergs and penguins mooned us, mocking us with glee. While seals and polar bears fondled us indiscreetly and though we fawned repulsion we actually rhapsodized in ecstasy.

You didn’t? Okay, feign ignorance- I can only write what I believe.

I believe in Creeps. (Or in France, as they are know, Crepes) I’ve reviewed their music but this is the first time I’m seeing them live. They have two guys from Honest John, one guy from Neighborhood Shit and two guys from parts unknown.

They have the same singer from Honest John, my least favorite name of bands we review and this is Creeps, one of my favorite names. Now, if it was The Creeps I wouldn’t like it as much. Creeps is so much better and before their set they give me a pin with the best person on the planet on it, John Waters, who I truly wish was President…of the world.

So do they honestly sound like Honest John? No, this is much doomier and metalish than hardcore. And though I do love Honest John I think this band might be headed where music is going, at least in the gutters of art and passion while contrivance and commercialism set Paris aflame. I can see this band becoming one of my favorites in a short time and I look forward to seeing them again.

A great way to open the day. Please, feel free, anytime to give me…Creeps!

Line 131 is next and describe themselves as hardcore/ metal/ punk and their description couldn’t appeal to me more unless the description was punk rock, Mexican food and beer?

But for me, I see no Mexican food influence. I think they fall into the metal/ hardcore style with a little bit of that Rage Against The Machine funk thrown in.

Okay, I gotta say their style seems a little passe’ right now and though they are far from being sloppy, the style they do only works when it’s super tight and today’s set is not.

But do I hate this band as I hate life itself?

Not at all, if their style appeals to you I can easily see you liking this band. I just wasn’t overly impressed.

Words Of Truth are next and they have a brand new EP that, coincidentally, is reviewed this week. This show was put together by their bass player, Sean Connery, English actor well known for his James Bond movies but with this project he really gets to spread out.

This is a band that is influenced by New York heavy hardcore but they have lots of songs that are pure rock like early Kiss! (And yes, I consider mentioning Kiss a compliment though I’m not saying they sound like them!). They have a rhythm section that is one of the tightest in Boston, an able front man that prowls the pit and a slew of hardcore and rock/Oi songs that deliver just what the doctor ordered. That’s if the doctor prescribed intense, hard hitting hardcore. Now if they could just get into the white makeup and pyrotechnics they’ll be stars.

Before I looked it up I would’ve guess Tenebrae was some kind of fish or maybe a bone in anatomy but what it means is “a Christian religious celebration,” so I was, more or less, correct. But what Tenebrae is, is a great band with black metal vocals and music that straddles the line between metal and hardcore and who also, recently produced a great split EP along with Panzer Bastard.

Tenebrae is one of the more popular bands we cover and if you’ve seen them live you can tell why. They play tight, powerful sets with little space in-between songs. Today, though, during the first song, one of the guitarists amp heads explodes (I know the feeling).

Once they get the technical difficulties out of the way they return to their regularly scheduled program of intense metal/ hardcore that is passionate, potent and perfect which constitutes the rest of their set.

All of the bands on today’s bill have a good amount of metal influence that peeks at the last two to play- Tenebrae and Cheech.

Cheech is up to take it out. From my observation they are one of the most beloved bands Providence has. My cohort in internet madness, Andy Bang, was infuriated that he had to miss Cheech and this show. He threatened to set his nostrils aflame in disgust. That’s because Cheech are a great, pure metal band but not so much a modern one, though they do have death vocals.

They have a lot of traditional metal influence and thrash in their music and they remind me of Motorhead when at their best and today, for this set, they truly are.

They end up playing many encores to appease the crowds frantic urging and they end up a perfectly great matinee show.

Okay, this is, hopefully, the beginning of the big thaw. And I don’t have no worries except when I’m gonna eat my Eskimo pie.

And you wonder if the tundra will return again? Oh, yes my sweet, frigid Eski-moes’s and Eski- mary’s. But not for awhile, while we scrape the slush from our boots only to enjoy some doom/ sludge metal- warmer days and nights are ahead for us. And music so hot and passionate that it’ll scorch a permanent scar upon your soul. An emblem of passion and disgust from the very depths of your soul.

This was a great show and I think I ought to quit while I’m ahead.
