Death ray Vision – 5 Song EP

Death Ray Vision is termed a ‘side project’ for Killswitch Engage and Shadows Fall band members Mike D’Antonio (bassist) and Brian Fair (vocals), along with Seamless’s Pete Cortese (guitar) and, of course, Zack Wells (guitar) and Colin Conway (drums), but I’d like to think the correct phrasing should actually be; Death Ray Vision is the new ‘super band’ out of Boston created by some very talented seasoned musicians, who have joined forces to energize and excite our senses with their own very cool brand of thrashy metallic hardcore. From their bio (… on their band profile here) they say, “The songs are short blasts of energy and intensity built on thrash metal rhythms and chugging guitar riffs. Death Ray Vision recalls the insanity of the old hardcore days while remaining focused on destroying the future.” And I think that really sums them up.

A couple of weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to check out the band (along with Slimedog) up close and personal at Great Scott in Allston (in fact, Slimedog snagged them for an interview that you can find here). As they took the stage and played their set, two things about their performance really stuck in my head. First and foremost, their sound and energy were awesome. So many cool things goin’ on at the same time. A great guitar tandem (of Pete and Zack) with nice buzz saw action. An awesome bass and drum combo (from Mike and Colin) sustaining both the high speed thrash-core, as well as slower tempo funky bits. And intense driving vocals (from Brian) to round out the mayhem and focus the energy. If I were to attempt a comparison, I would have to say that Death Ray Vision is sort of like a blending of Slayer and Soundgarden. The second thing I took away from their performance, and perhaps the most amazing thing of all, is that, Brian Fair’s dreadlocks are actually down to his knees (…well, I was amazed). Sorry, but I digress. I’m actually here to talk about the very cool EP Death Ray Vision released entitled, ‘Get Lost or Get Dead’.

If you can’t experience Death Ray Vision live, the next best thing would be to check out their new EP, ‘Get Lost or Get Dead’ (which you can download from their bandcamp site here: http://deathrayvision.bandcamp.com/album/get-lost-or-get-dead).

The first song, entitled ‘Shattered Frames’, is a straight ahead fast paced ditty with their signature guitar chugging tempo change. And suddenly, we’re off and running….

The second song (…also the title track) is called ‘Get Lost or Get Dead’ and takes off like a mad bat out of hell. It  gives way to a funky tempo’d chugger with an anthem-esque chorus that eventually emerges back to it’s origins with a cool guitar/bass run before fading away as quickly as it began (…don’t try this at home).

The third song, ‘Not for Glory’, reverses the trend of the first two tunes by starting out a bit slower, featuring awesome dissed guitar riffing and direct beat drumming while Brian asks, “What are you searching for…”. Then the lid flies off the steaming pot giving way to an intense frenzied hardcore run for a couple of bars, before leading into an infectiously catchy chorus, “Try to fight it, but there’s a better way …”. Shake well and repeat. Very cool tune.

I feel the fourth and fifth songs really belong together. ‘Chainsaw of Bees’ acts as a really cool instrumental intro into the fifth song, ‘Drown the Light’ . In ‘Chainsaw of Bees’ the band showcases their musical talents with cool drumming and chugging guitar riffs replete with a tempo change into a more death thrash vibe. And just as we become hypnotized by the mesmerizing slow guitar chugging, ….bang…, we’re shot out the proverbial cannon back into the mad spotlight by the frenzied excitement of ‘Drown the Light’. A tune that features awesome double beating base drums, cool guitar riffs, great vocals, nice tempo changes….aahw, fuck it!…never mind, ….you get the picture.

Death Ray Vision is an awesome band!! I hope they decide to hang out with us for a very long time.
