Disco Rice – “4 Walls Screaming”

Disco Rice – “4 Walls Screaming”

I love the name of this band- Disco Rice.

That’s how I started my last review of this band. But since that was so long ago, or really, just earlier this year- I felt it was time again, to lead off with that line again.

And the fact that the name, “Disco Rice”, sounds like an absurd, random name when, in actuality, it’s from the jargon of coroner office workers, when they come upon a dead body with crawling maggots, hence- Disco Rice!

Well, that just ruined my appetite.

But then that vision is suitable for a band that conjures up some unpleasant music that is so rough and raw and uncompromising. They are anything but smooth and subtle, sounding much like an electric drill coming down upon an exposed nerve in your mouth. That also, rips your life apart and tares away at it’s
falsities, conventions and niceties and leaves a gaping wound in your pain-stricken being.

“Hey, that doesn’t sound like much fun to me, Slimedog!”

But what arises is a sense of peace by facing the cruelties of life, head on, without any lies or banalities obstructing the way. Allowing you to enjoy the power and passion of truth when it shines through, into your eyes, seeping in through your ears and illuminating your mind with a simple, true beauty that can only be described as art.

Let’s check it out and see if the pain is worth it:

With a hard rockin’ beat and emphatic vocals “Make It End” rolls out like it’s a do or die to oblivion with a steamroller of sound rolling over your senses. The passion and pain in the vocals, the intensity and drive in the instruments is obvious. This song rocks and kicks ass so mightily that I wanted it to never
end. Favorite tune on the EP.

With the guttural, low sound of the vocal that suggests someone gargling on broken glass, what emits is vast pools of protest and disgust. “Caught in a wheel of torment, that never stops turning. Vicissitude of persistence, your pathetic hate burning…what makes you lick the heels of boots, that grind you
down? I just wanna live but I’m no collaborator.” Well, I don’t believe I am either but if it equaled the power and the awesomeness of this tune, especially the last part when it switches to an overdrive, rockin’ beat? Then I would sign up and tell all.

“4Walls Screaming” starts out with an overly, aggressive vocal and a rhythm much like if Motorhead, in their prime, were a bit more pissed off and frenzied. This song is a pure expression of dismay and disillusionment along with a passionate, driving energy full of spite. And when the vocals, towards the end,
chant “Nothing is nothing and never again,” the song builds into an intense, energetic pulse that can’t be surpassed in power.

“Twisted” is taken at break neck speed, like knuckles clenched to the sides on a roller coaster ride. The vocals are in a disturbed, emotional mode suggesting some disaster is eminent. “One step from the streets. It’s all you can do to keep yourself upright. When you’re born to lose.” This song is a bashing, smashing onslaught of rhythm and aural abuse. There’s also an awesome, fuzzed out bass solo in this song. (I don’t think I’ve ever written that line before!) “The world’s so twisted, twisted and bruised, finger on the button, no more lives left to lose.” So closes the book on another, wonderful release from this band.

A lot of art, true art is beautiful. It makes you wonder at it’s beauty and maybe, also the beauty that resides in life.

It inspires you to the levels that life can reach at times.

And then, a lot of art reflects how most of life, truly is- full of horror! But instead of depressing you, you take consolation in knowing that someone else is reflecting how sad and frustrated you are with it all. How someone else can express and understand the painful truths society seeks to hide.

And though it points out facts that are disconcerting, you take joy in someone who is truthfully expressing your pain, your experience and you can accept it and rise above it, as it is acknowledged and now, you can takes the steps to deal with it, in the best way you can.

Disco Rice is just another bunch of guys banging on strings and drum heads, banging on instruments to make a loud noise.

It’s nothing new, this tribal, pure, raw expression, it’s really not- anything new.

But I’d suggest you take out your earphones, avert your eyes from the cellphone in your hands. You were meant to communicate with real people in real time with real people that you know.

You might discover something with this band that is quite primal and tribal, encompassing the purpose of music that has served for millions of years.

What you might find with this band is something that is not so easy to take but ultimately, rewarding.

And you might find some great, passionate uncompromising music looking towards the future while maintaining the reason music begin with, as well.

I recommend it to listen to-while in your four walls screaming.
