Drug Shock – “Drug Shock”

The other day I was going through my very vintage vinyl album collection (vinyl? WTF is that?) and discovered an item I had no clue about. Wow, how exciting is that!!! What could it be? I scanned my brain for an answer.

Perhaps it’s an awesome pioneering hardcore band from the late 70’s, like Discharge, or maybe even some obscure Scandinavian death metal band. Well, there’s only one way to find out. I dusted off the old turn-table and cued it up.

With hot cup of Joe in hand, I got comfortable in my favorite easy chair and awaited with excited anticipation for the first tune to serenade my ears. I gently took a swig of my coffee just as the intro commenced, soon to be followed by the vocals. Suddenly, with a quick jerk, as if possessed by demons, I simultaneously stood up, dropped the coffee cup from my hand and spewed molten hot coffee all over the turn-table.

Needless to say, the tune was amazingly dreadful. It embodied all the vowels of the alphabet; awful, excremental, incendiary, obtuse and icky. I won’t reveal the artist to protect the innocent, but suffice to say, I quickly packaged up the album and cover art, dug a deep whole in my backyard and buried it where no one will ever find it again (I only hope the dog didn’t see me).

I can’t imagine how this evil drivel crept into my record collection or what strange malaise had taken over my brain to force me to make such a purchase, but it soon got me thinking….

The music I really love never, ever gets old. Without question, the really great music (like the music TNB espouses) is truly and undeniably, timeless. The bands from the early days, like Discharge, Circle Jerks, Germs, Fear, Dictators, Dead Boys, UK Subs, Sex Pistols, etc. are just as relevant today as they were when they started. And that the bands of today are so heavily influenced by those bands is the ultimate endorsement, indeed. After all, if it ain’t broke, why fix it.

Speaking of which, a few months back, TNB was at a wicked cool show which included an awesome Punkin’ Oi band from New Haven, Connecticut called, Drug Shock. Playing a mixture of early 80’s UK Punk and Oi, these dudes definitely don’t need any fixin’. With green mo-hawk in tow, Drug Shock is just the remedy for what ails you.

Band members Todd, John, James, and Eren simply want to play genuine punk rock in the vein of shit they grew up listening to, which is good enough for me. They have a debut EP containing 5 great tunes, which you can download from bandcamp. Let’s check out a few of the tunes right now.

“On The Prowl” starts it all off with a straight ahead, high energy, head-banger to knock you off the couch. So get swingin’ and leap into the pit!!!

“Smash N Grab” brings it with all the trappings embodied in the great punk tunes of yore. Enjoy.

“System Overload” starts out slow, but eventually builds to insane levels, finally overloading and melting down that stinkin’ reactor. Better get out while you can.

Drug Shock is a timeless band playing timeless music. Good and good for you. Definitely YAGBFC (Yet another great band from Connecticut), not to be confused with (You ass grabbin’ butt fuckin’ conehead). Be sure to check them out.
