Eaten – “Depraved”

Eaten – “Depraved”

Now grindcore, by definition, is music inspired by thrash, industrial, noise and crust punk, but falls definitely into the category of metal.

I’m never too clear on definitions in the metal field, or life itself for that matter. But I do know that, when I hear a local metal band that makes my heart go “pitter patter” that the tag of grindcore is usually tagging right along.

And I do like Eaten. Seems they’ve been around five years and it seems they’re from The Cape, Cape Cod; you know, where they make the funky potato chips. The Cape has a small but excellent punk and metal scene, both fans and bands.

Eaten songs are how I like a musical meal to be served. Short and quick, never quite reaching the two minute mark, one song is nine seconds long, another forty. The music is brutal and hard- this is no quasi-mystical black metal prog with hallucinations about unicorns on Neptune. This is in your face music, energetic and real, like the best of punk and hardcore.

True, intense, passionate and exciteful.

Yes, that last word is a real word. I checked it out. No need to be so mistrustful.

Let’s sit down and dine.

“Slave Species” starts off with some sustained, powerful chords at a pace that might signify doom is up ahead, ready to descend. But soon the drums start rolling, the vocals appear with a dark, raspy gasp and the guitars add jittery, icy tones that rev us up into thrash territory. “The blackened crust of the union and the working class grasp the hammer/ Use the molten anvil/ Start pounding your life away.” This song is full of energy, passion, abrasiveness and power. It slows down a bit, somewhat repeating the beginning, leading us to a crushing, decisive end.

Some smashing guitar chords, aggressive bass and a pounding beat leads of “Perish.” Once the grunting, death vocals come in, the rhythm switches to double time and the whole song explodes with energy. “Build it to plan/ Who you’re taking/ Life will stand/ Confused and mistaken/ Trapped in a world of terror.” There are a few seconds of pause where the guitar breaks off to throw metallic shards of sounds at our ears but then were back into the exciting chaos and turmoil. A great tune.

“Evolving Infection” starts with a blistering paced, shredding guitar lick that rips through the song like a lightning bolt of fire. A low, death vocal grunts along with an energetic, propulsive beat. “Swath that will devour razors/ The path that leads to destruction…The burden of chance/ Repeat the epidemic hoax.” There is a stop for some accents from the guitar until were thrust back into the musical maelstrom. The lick returns and the rhythm moves relentlessly on toward the finish of another great song.

“Entombed In Failure” begins with a feed-backing guitar that sounds like a fluorescent light exploding while a grim dirge starts around it. Then a machine like chugging guitar moves forward with a four note dissonant lick at the end of each line. This is another cheery number with lyrics like: “Torn from the womb of life to live in desolation/ Congregation of the damned.” After a short while the beat becomes more persistent, the guitars more vicious and the vocals more desperate and spent. “Fallen crucible covered in blood/ A new world of shame.” the music becomes more intense, claustrophobic, the drums now wailing on every beat, the guitars like a turning machine that can not be shut off. At the end a drum roll leads to one last burst of energy for this great, passionate, powerful song.

Can I put Eaten with all the other local metal bands that I like; most, like Eaten, who I’ve heard but haven’t seen? That straddle the fine lines between hardcore and thrash, metal and punk, abandonment and oblivion, pleasure and vice.

I believe so.

I think they’ve taken the best fruits from the trees of punk, metal and hardcore and regurgitated it upon our ears for all of us to savor- then put it on a dragonfly for it to take it up to the unicorns on Neptune.

Oh, sorry- that’s all from the black metal review.

Here, on this planet, Eaten’s world- things are brutal, hard, sharp and strong.

They’re aggressive, energetic, engaging and passionate.

And devoured enthusiastically-

That’s Eaten.
