Interview with OC45

So it took a while before we got to interview these guys and when we did we found out it was their 200th show. And then we found out they started a month after we did- we started May 2011- and to do that many shows in that period of time shows a band serious about what they do and a band willing to play; and travel.

As a band that’s done several tours across the country I was curious to hear how they compared the local scene to others. While talking to Adam, one of the two guitarists/vocalists in the band, he reiterated what Mike McClogan of the Street Dogs told me a few months ago. Namely, that Boston has a great reputation around the country and in his mind there is no better scene.

And in my opinion there is no finer pop/punk band that we cover on our site. And we’re psyched to see bands that we’ve written about in their early days, like them and BarRoom Heroes, prove us right in lauding them.

So let’s do this interview, where the boys talk about onanism and really having too much time on their hands or spending too much time with idle hands, not sure which.

Slimedog- So I found out tonight you guys started three years ago this June.

Adam (guitar/vocals)- Our first practices were in June, our first show was July fourth weekend, 2011.

Slimedog- Thrash N Bang started about the same time. We started in May, 2011.

Derek (guitar/vocals)- So you were unfortunate enough to see our first shows.

Slimedog- Well, actually Andy did your first live review from the Midway. We went on-line the same date that the preacher who bought the billboards and was predicting the end of the world. (Laughter)

Derek- People thought it was the rapture, they were selling off their belongings cause they thought “we’re all gonna die.”

Tanzi (bass)- I sold everything I had.

Slimedog- We saw Taxi Driver around the same time we first saw you and it’s great to see new bands we cover grow and prosper, so to speak.

Derek- We love Taxi Driver, they started right after us.

Adam- We gave you a t-shirt at the first show we played with Taxi Driver.

Slimedog- I wear that every week and I remember that show well- it was Frontrunner, OC45, Taxi Driver and then Lenny Lashley. I remember that show especially by being surprised at the awe of the young crowd of Lenny doing his acoustic thing after three loud punk/hardcore bands had played, it was very moving.

Derek- Lenny has sort of taken all of us, all the bands, under his wing. And he’s done a lot to help us gain a little headway. I think the local scene owes a lot to Lenny Lashley and the Midway Cafe.

Slimedog- You don’t have to convince Thrash N Bang ’cause- where do we get our material from?

Derek- When you walk in and Lenny singles you out by name- I don’t know, it just feels communal. When we go out on our tours I do miss home and what I mean by that isn’t necessarily our own bed or actual meals but our friends in the Boston punk scene. It feels great to do that first show back.

Kory (drums)- I was only 19 at the time of that show and had to wait outside and I remember Lenny felt bad for me.

Adam- Now that the Lenny Lashley blowjob session is over. (Laughter)

Slimedog- How many states have you played in now?

Derek- I should know this, let me try to pull that up. (Using his phone)

Adam- Well, while Derek’s trying to pull that up- one of Kory’s goals is to masturbate in every state. Now that we’ve already been more than once to many states- now it’s how many times can I masturbate here?

Tanzi- You gotta show progress.

Adam- So instead of, “Oh, hey, I’ve already masturbated here; no big deal.” It’s-“Okay, I’m gonna try to do it four times in this state.” So that’s one thing we keep track of.

Slimedog- As Crosby, Stills and Nash say- love the one your with.

Derek- And your with yourself all the time.

Slimedog- They say you have to love yourself before you can love anybody else.

Derek- I think it’s thirty-three states plus a couple of cities in Quebec.

Slimedog- And let it be stated that Thrash N Bang is not asking young men where they masturbate. (Laughter)

Derek- We brought that up ourselves.

Slimedog- We’re asking where you play not where you play with yourselves. How many tours have you done?

Adam- We’ve done three tours- five weeks U.S.- did one month, Quebec to Miami and back to Boston- and this past fall we did a two month full U.S.. And we’re about to embark on a tour this spring including Canada, Midwest, Vegas and Arizona. Planes are actually gonna be involved in this next one.

Slimedog- I heard you guys had a good time in Wyoming? I’ve been there; it’s like driving on the moon.

Adam- It’s miles and miles of hilly terrain and then we came over this hill and we dipped into this valley where Laramie was. It’s like a city slash town plopped in this middle of a valley; totally cowboy town. And it’s a Tuesday night, we thought the show was gonna suck. Redbush (who played tonight) hooked us up for the show. Miguel from Teenage Bottle Rocket showed up, he loved us. And it turned out to be a really great show.

Slimedog- Do you have any weird stories from being on tour?

Adam- We was in Vegas and Kory didn’t know you could have sex or masturbate standing up. He couldn’t get it. So apparently while we were in Vegas he tried in the bathroom of the Double Down Saloon (Vegas’s most famous dive bar). He figured he could jerk off standing up so he hit it like four times in this dirty, gross bathroom of the dive bar.

Tanzi- Well where else is he gonna do it? In the parking lot?

Adam- Yeah, but four times in one night!

Tanzi- I’m pretty sure I saw you bangin’ someone against the pinball machine that night.

Adam- I was making out with her. I banged her at her apartment later that night.

Tanzi- At least Kory was standing up and not on the grimy, ass floor. You got a handjob behind the fuckin’ pinball machine on the floor at the Double Down.

Slimedog- So who drinks the most in the band?

All- Derek!

Adam- I try to party more but Derek drinks when there’s nothing going on.

Slimedog- Who, in the band, is most likely to become a serial killer?

Tanzi- Kory. (All agree)

Kory- Seriously? That’s on me!

Derek- Look at him. We’ll break him sooner or later.

Adam- We try to act like his older brothers and teach him. And by teach him I mean we give him shit… and someday he’s gonna break.

Derek- I will try to manipulate all of you to kill one another. And then I’ll start a solo project with Dave Wells.
