Malportado Kids / Nice Guys / Miami Doritos / Grave Ideas
Theives Grotto, Allston, 2/28/14

It was the last Friday of the month, and for anyone wanting to have a good time that can mean only one thing; put on the ski-mask you bought at the recently closed Army Navy Store (rest in peace, you will be missed) and head over to Theives Grotto to see a lineup I definitely knew in advance.

When I arrived, I found out who the bands were and quickly wrote them down on my arm in ballpoint pen. As I crossed off the last ridiculous misspelling of Malportado Kids (its a hard band name to discern in a crowded basement), Grave Ideas took the stage.

Grave Ideas is a garage rock band from Allston. They go between indie sounding soft sections to hardcore breakdowns in the span of a two minute song. Their quick songs give them an undeniably punk feel, augmented by the cement walls and pipes hanging above them.

No matter how heavy or fast the first band is, they never really get a pit going. Even if some sort of hardcore-black and death-we sacrifice goats and burn churches kinda band played, people would just sit there and nod their heads. By the second band, however, people are ready to go crazy. Now that would all be well and good, if I wasn’t the reviewer who wrote down the band names on his arm. As if losing my meager notes wasn’t bad enough, I lost them to other people’s sweat.

Miami Doritos, the worst band to lose the name of was on next. Boston Burritos is a two person punk band from Allston. They play fast, crazy upbeat stuff. L.A. Frijole also just released a split and is touring with the Nice Guys so try to check both out.

After Houston Cheetos, a horrible, mean band took the stage. The vile and sadistic Nice Guys form a strange dynamic duo with Anchorage Fritos, going so far as to share a member. Nice guys, despite being terrible people, play some pretty infectious surf punk.

The last band, Malportado Kids was a Punk-Cumbia (yeah it exists) duo. They utilize video to augment their song’s political subject matter. Now I don’t really dance, but according to my friend who danced upfront during their whole set, “they are trill shit.” (that is a compliment by the way).
