More Beer Please – “The War On Thirst”

More beer, please.

More Satan’s Blood, please.

I gave up drinking November 16th. Not for good, just to take a break and hopefully, cut down on drinking when I return to the lineup. It’s been easy and it’s been hard.

So when editor Andy Bang tossed this CD on my desk, with a chuckle and a smirk, I grimaced.

More beer, please.

At The Midway now, I like to drink something I call Satan’s Blood. It’s tomato juice on ice. Or the blood of sacrificial virgins- either one will suffice.

But I haven’t seen or heard of More Beer Please for awhile now. If I remember they were from Lowell and had ska mixed in with the skate punk. But it’s been too many days and too many beers to recall.

What you do get on this sixteen track album is an unrelenting onslaught of sounds and rhythms, of skate or speed punk, whichever you choose. Unrelenting hardcore rhythms, of rolling drums; slicing, crashing guitars; unrelenting vocals with unstoppable passion and fury exploding in a barrage of expression, energy and excitement- finally, equaling fun.

Yeah, the ska pops up in a couple of songs, almost momentarily, mostly this is a speed rush of venomous diatribes with pulverizing rhythms and passionate playing.

Let’s enjoy a few rounds and imbibe of this CD!

“War Shroom” leads off the album like an explosive being lit with a fuse and with a clever title that combines war, bathrooms and psychedelic mushrooms. Starting with a stuttering, aggressive guitar like a pit-bull snarling on a leash, and drums that sound like an avalanche, this all leads us into a powerful three chord riff. Then, this is quickly followed with an unwavering vocal line that only ceases when the music suddenly stops to shout “War”! I assume this is a song against the perils of war but I know for sure that it’s a powerful, energetic song full of cataclysm guitars, devastating drums and tons of passion.

With a nice melodic guitar riff “Last Laugh” starts off moderately enough but once the drums come in to rush it along forward, the intensity is pulled up a notch and then even further so with the vocals spitting out epitaphs as the background vocals answer emphatically. This song moves along nicely with the guitars scratching along with the tumultuous drums. And this is no laughing matter, this is one seriously great song.

“On The Rocks” starts with some grinding guitar chords answered again with some hyperactive drums. While I can’t make out the words I’m guessing the singer is ordering his Satan’s Blood “on the rocks,” while the background vocals swoop in to go wooh-oh-oh. This is another crashing, careening joy ride out of control along treacherous mountain highways until the singer proclaims, “Going Down,” and the chords descend down signaling the end of another fine tune.

A machine gun like guitar starts off “Blue Balls” that pauses along with the rhythm section to allow the singer to shout out a line or two. Then he’s pulled back into the revolving cyclone of the musical storm. In the middle is a short ska breakdown that accelerates bringing it back into the previous maelstrom. The musical storm continues, taking no prisoners until four descending chords alert us that another great song must end.

The name of the album is “The War On Thirst” which seems like another un-winnable war. Like the “War On Poverty” started back in the sixties. “The War On Drugs”- how’s that one going? And now, “The War On Terrorism.” I figure all three will always be around.

The war on thirst can be won though, but only for a short time and the desire to keep quenching it can be a loosing battle- and one that some need to step away from, at least for awhile.

But if you thirst for some energetic, hardcore speed punk with great guitar riffs, powerful drums and vehement, passionate vocals- well, look no further.

This album is on Soundcloud and I’m not sure if it’s available yet. You can check with the band here:

You’ll find you won’t be satisfied with one, you’ll need more and more!

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
