May 4th, 1995″The 400-capacity, split-level diner/club is about a mile from the DCU Center, tucked behind
a factory complex known as Northworks. It’s on 95 Prescott St. (right off of Grove Street) and it’s well worth the effort to locate it.If the word funky was invented for anything, it was invented for Ralph’s. When you walk in and turn left, you’re in the “Rock ‘n’ Roll Diner”, originally built in the ’30s in Worcester’s Chadwick Square, then moved to its present site by owners Ralph and Carol Moberly in 1979. It’s an ultra-cool, burger-and-chili joint that serves food until 12:30 a.m.If you turn right, you move into Ralph’s grotto-like bar inside a former factory building (great idea to attach the diner to this warehouse-like space, which had been a fire station for the factory). The crowd, ranging from twentysomethings on up, is quite friendly, especially by most urban standards. And the bohemian-favored room is filled with murals painted by local artists, as well as bric-a-brac like an antique phone booth and various yard sale goodies.
Upstairs is the concert room, which has a laid-back, Local 186 feel, but with many more eccentric furnishings. There are mannequin legs jutting from a wall; rock stickers plastered to a window (from the bands Spinning Jenny and Grinning Broadly, as well as from the Newbury Comics chain); and even a couple of motorcycles hanging from the ceiling (though this isn’t a biker bar)… Boston acts Jennifer Tryin, Cobalt 60, and Letters to Cleo have all played there; as have such national bands as Alice In Chains, Living Color and the Smithereens.”
