Scaphism – “Festering Human Remains”

As Billy works feverishly on his new toy, he utters, “Hmm, let’s see, … just a little more lube … and … ah perfect! … my new chainsaw is ready for it’s maiden voyage.” Billy looks quizzically around the room. “Now I just need something to saw.” Drool begins to form at the corners of his mouth. Finally he mutters, “Umm, maybe if I play some music I can get a few ideas.” Billy quickly searches through his CD collection and randomly produces a gruesomely gory death metal album containing visions of violence and destruction. He pops it in his boom box and hits play. Almost immediately a sinister grin transforms Billy’s face. The corners of his mouth go up as his brow goes down. His shoulders move back and forth as a maniacal guttural laugh escapes his throat. He grabs his new toy and hastily leaves the room …

Yes friends, this nightmare-ish scene is becoming all too familiar these days. Millions of innocent young boys all across our great nation are walking into hardware stores to purchase chainsaws only to be horribly transformed into maniacal mass murdering evil do’ers after falling under the influences of that terrible scourge of life known as, death metal music. Why just the other day, I was talking to my imaginary internet girl friend about just how awful this epidemic has become …

She recommended I check out a very cool gory death metal CD release by an awesome Boston-based outfit known as Scaphism. Their full-length CD is titled, Festering Human Remains and WOW, does it pack a wallop! With no less than nine tremendously thrashy blood and guts death movements, it’s sure to send you into a frothing, moshing, metal feeding frenzy.

The crazed dudes of Scaphism that make it all happen are, Evan Woolley on guitar, Tony Jordan on vocals, Josh Staples on bass nd Alex Fewell on drums. Fortunately for me, I was able to check out Scaphism live at a Suffocation show at the Middle East in Cambridge a while back. Truly an awesome night of metal music I will not soon forget.

Whata ya say, we dive right in and get this preview of finely crafted extreme music underway.

The first track on the CD is called, Encephalopathy which refers to injury concerning the brain. Speaking of which, the tune gradually leaps out of the darkness and into your brain like an eighteen wheeler flying off an overpass into your living room. Smash, bang, boom! Great blast beats, awesome varied growlings and nice lamenting guitar riffery. Tip: for extra enjoyment try nailing left foot to floor and running swiftly with the right.

The second track, Pathogenic Bacteria, is an exceptional thrashy chugger. Highlighted by ferocious guitar riffs, pedantic vocals and abrupt timing changes. As your head spins watching the mosh pit go round and round, it’s sure to keep your toes tapping.

Now let’s get on to the exciting fourth track called, Chainsawdomy. Arguably my favorite tune on the CD, the lyrics are so inventive I’m always left chuckling. Musically, it’s a mad frenzy of a tune with wild guitar riffs and non-stop blast beats. This one’s for you Billy. “… your still alive as he cuts, he sticks his dick in your guts, you prey to God let me die, as he blows his load in your eye … chainsawdomy

Track 8 called, Violating The Deceased, is another fun ditty to keep your juices flowing (literally). Awesome guitar riffs keep you teetering on the edge of sanity. A nice galloping drum beat to push the mosh pit ever faster. And with a scream, it’s over.
