Slimedog’s 22nd Birthday Punk Pizza Party!
Kermit’s Finger / The McGunks / The Lost Riots / Uncle Spudd / Time Out Timmy / Linn Svedka (Linn & Joe)
Midway Cafe, Jamaica Plain, MA     5/20/18

It’s been great drinking legally for the last year; constantly, of course, but I must admit I had a few drinks even before then. And at this show I had some more, plus a really great time. Thanks to my partner in crime, Andy Bang, who without him, not only would I not be writing for TNB, I probably wouldn’t have made it this far. Thanks to Jo & Jake for the ice cream cake, Nick & Rachel coming all the way from The Cape. The great artist, Jess Punk, making a rare appearance. The Midway Staff and all the bands and everyone who attended to make this a really, great show!

The following is a text review we conducted during the festivities:

Slimedog- Where are The Spice Girls? You promised they were gonna play my birthday party?

Andy- I know. Sorry. I tried, but apparently they’ve broken up. Who knew? But instead we have some awesomely, sprightly bands to take their place.

(Slimedog throws himself face forwards onto the floor, sobbing hysterically and kicking his heels)

Slimedog- I don’t want any party then! Tell everyone to leave! Send all the bands home!

Andy- Now, now Slimey. I know it’s disappointing that you won’t be able to get a spanking from Scarey Spice but perhaps we can work something out with the new bartender.

Slimedog- I really wanted it from Baby Spice. But I’m fine now. Maybe Kim Spice will show up to reward me? Can I at least have my Jagermeister baby bottle?

Andy- We couldn’t find you the baby bottle. Here, just take the real bottle. It’s bigger.

Slimedog- You know when I act up like that at the TNB office, I’m often forced to take a time out. “Time out, Slimey,” the office help say to me…I think you know where I’m leading?

Andy- Ummm, you want someone to give you a time out? Oh, wait. The first band is called, Time Out Slimedog? No, that’s not it. I give up.

Slimedog- Close, they’re called Time Out Timmy, a trio from New Hampster. I’ve never seen them before.

Andy- Oh, I saw a cool YouTube video by them.

Slimedog- Yes, I saw some good clips, too. But it didn’t prepare me for their electrifying set.

Andy- True. They’re a very good live band with awesome energy.

Slimedog- They’re a couple, a boy and girl who both sing and play guitar and bass, disrespectfully, sound a bit like X and describe themselves as skate punk.

Andy- Great set. Now, while the next band gets ready, be a good boy and throw back that Jager.

Slimedog- Did you notice my silver shirt? I feel like I’m the prettiest boy in the world! Though, Iggy Pop did say that my pretty face is going to hell.

Andy- I don’t think Iggy Pop was talking to you when he said it. But your shirt is quite special. Did you get that at the dollar store?

Slimedog- It’s my last remnant from when I was in a fifties show band in the eighties. But folks will, wrongly, assume I’m making that up. Oh, and I forgot to mention- Time Out Timmy killed a moose with their car three days ago?

Andy- That’s strange. My pet moose went missing three days ago.

Slimedog- I believe the moose had incriminating photos of them being at a Phish concert. Now it’s another band from moose country. Uncle Spudd from Maine.

Andy- Yeah another energetic trio named after my favorite fruit.

Slimedog- Are you sure that potato is a fruit? Punk bands from Maine always have a bit of fresh air to them, none of that grimey, slimey city vibe.

Andy- Sure what else could a potato be? Yeah I’ve always liked Maine.

Slimedog- They just played my request for their song “Vic Robinson”. He puts on lots of great shows in Maine but he’s also a straight-edge vegan. I just told the band that if I ever meet Vic, I will rip his throat out and stomp upon it on the ground!

Andy- Good. Serves him right for not liking crooked meat. Who’s next?

Slimedog-  The Lost Riots from Connecticut are next and their bass player has the same birthday as me!

Andy- Well I think you better tell him to piss off and get another birthday. You already have that one.

Slimedog- You’re right! I’m gonna rip his throat out and stomp upon it on the ground! But they’re my favorite band and play a style greatly influenced by early New York punk. Perhaps I’ll wait until after they play. They’re playing my favorite tune by them “Dead Boys.” I’m gonna jump on stage and sing along.

Andy- Dare I say they might even sound a bit hardcore-ish. Which is never a bad thing.

Slimedog- Yeah, the singer has roots in hardcore. And talk about favorites- we haven’t mentioned Linn Svedka, one of my favorite people, singing and strumming in between sets with a friend on electric guitar. Linn & Joe!

Andy- Oh that’s who they are. I thought they were at the wrong show and couldn’t figure out when it was their turn to play. That explains it. Very good.

Slimedog- Linn is singing a song she wrote for my birthday, it goes- “We don’t get older, oh no. We only get slimier. So I hope your day doesn’t suck, I hope you have a good day. So Happy Birthday you old fuck.”

Andy- Gee I wonder what she’d sing if you weren’t a friend?

Slimedog- It’s a beautiful song, though lyrically, I think she stole that from Bob Dylan. And now, another favorite- The McGunks.

Andy- Ya, these guys are seasoned veterans that never disappoint.

Slimedog- Bob McGunk is bemoaning approaching fifty! I may not really be twenty-two but I live my life the same.

Andy- True your 22 and I’m 19. And your mother keeps wondering if we will ever grow up.

Slimedog- The McGunks play great music, where punk meets rock’n’roll. They’re finishing with “Shout.” I’m gonna do the worm in front of the stage.

Andy- Cool, I’m gonna flog the Bishop in the back room.

Slimedog- I hope everything comes out okay. Now it’s another great, veteran band- Kermit’s Finger.

Andy- I thought that frog looked a digit short the last time I saw him.

Slimedog- Yes, a four finger frog is a frightful sight to see! Here’s another kick ass trio doing a style where early punk meets hardcore.

Andy- There’s something about these guys that remind me of Wire.

Slimedog- A great band to be compared to. But Wire you bringing that up? Well, after my initial disappointment I’ve seem to have had a really great time today!

Andy- Wait till you see who’s jumping out of your cake. What’s that…we couldn’t afford one of those either? Never mind. I’m glad you had a great birthday.

Slimedog- The best 22nd birthday yet! I can’t wait to celebrate my 22nd birthday again next year!

Andy- Next year you should invite your evil twin.

Slimedog- And have twice the fun.
