Tetsuo – “2018 Demo”

Tetsuo- definition 1) A type of fly which inhabits the North Western region of South Eastern Polynesia, that has the physical attributes of a Mongolian mountain goat and the dietary habits of an East Berlin ostrich. It is commonly recognized by it’s wearing of typical preppie attire such as, khaki pants and colorful monogrammed polo shirts with alligators on them.

Definition 2) Japanese for “Iron Man” (ooh, Black Sabbath!) A character from the anime, Akira, who has a real inferiority complex and finally gets to unleash his rage when he suddenly becomes endowed with super psychic powers.

Definition 3) A really fucked up movie, even more so than Eraserhead. (I’m assuming we’re eliminating John Water from this evaluation.)

Definition 4) A grindcore/ fastcore/ punk/ power violence band from Burlington, Vermont.

Please select which definition most describes what is being reviewed today. Please put away any reading material at this time. Please use only #2 pencils and refrain from looking at pretty girls or handsome boys in your vicinity as they will distract you from your aims and cause you to not reach your exalted goals in society. You are allotted, from when I start the timer, one hour and twenty minutes for your choice. You may start- now!

If you chose “Definition 1”- Congratulations! You are correct and what will follow is a thousand word dissertation about the Tetsuo fly and it’s affect on the eco-system of Outer Mongolia.

(Editors note: Please be informed that Slimedog has been appropriately scolded and persuaded to proceed with definition four. He has had his scrotum nailed to a tree to encourage him more thoroughly.)

Yes, it’s hard to believe (Ouch!) that from the beautiful state of Vermont, home of the beautiful Phish and the many beautiful trees where scrotums are often attached to- that such ungodly, hell bent, venom and bile spews out of the speakers from this debut.

Much like a hazardous waste spill.

While I contact Hazmat- let’s listen to the proceedings:

Starting with a slow, ominous, fuzzed out daze “Fascist,” portends an intriguing allure and also, kind of makes me think of the intro to the great Black Flag song “Six Pack”. The proceedings soon erupts with violent, hardcore vocals along with a rhythm at lethal, punk warp speed. There’s some echoing, answering vocals that recall the great, legendary Boston band, Mission Of Burma. “Fascist fucking piece of shit.” (Ooh, I didn’t realize this song was about the President!) This song is raw and powerful- unique, short and passionate and bursting with energy and emotion- much like a lot of great early, punk and hardcore songs.

“Fuck The Alt-Right,” starts out with a wave of guitar feedback until it ignites with an in your face vocal backed by a thrashing/fastcore blur of emotion and sound that pulverize your senses and increases the adrenaline through your body, tenfold. The chorus is spit out in a high, black metal voice while the music explodes like a sonic boom or a gas leak explosion inside your head. There’s a short, pounding instrumental section before those effective, echo-ey vocals come soaring back in to lead us to the ending, the ending of another perfect song.

Doom was a hardcore band from England, late eighties, and like most bands, they were doomed for failure. They were a precursor to grindcore and here their song “Police Bastard” is covered. This song is a blistering, blasting discharge of bile with a bombardment of bashing sound and is a seething, salivating  vehicle of disgust and hate. Take this as a complaint against all the brave police unions defending their own when they murder black people. (In Chicago last week.) Or take it as a forceful, energetic display of emotion, excitement and truth. Great and powerful, either way.

The Tetsuo Fly is often undetected, camouflaged in it’s preppie attire, easily evading its’ predators like the heavy metal spiked armadillo.

Vermont is a beautiful state.

I believe it’s the most beautiful state in New England, much better than Maine.

But I’m not here to talk about beauty.

I’m here to talk about music- and music that contains passion, value and truth.

And sometimes those adjectives don’t conjure up the most beautiful display. As they say- sometimes the truth is ugly.

And though, I guess, a lot of folks would say- this music is too harsh, too intense, too abrasive to deign it beautiful…

For me it registers as art.

And art can be gorgeous beyond belief or utterly, colorless with out a hope only despair but a refreshing truth splashed upon your mind.

The art I like the most, is of the later.

The art I like is right here.
