The Doll Eyes – Too Many Feelings

THE DOLL EYES / TOO MANY FEELINGS

Listening to this cd today I have my favorite cd of 2011, at least so far. This cd has 13 lucky songs on it and it’s very rare that I will like all the songs on a cd with that many songs but this one I do. Energetic rhythms, growly hooks, lyrics that mean something, occasional wooh-oh’s background vocals are ingredients for these Doll Eyes.

Sure, theirs plenty of punk and hardcore influence on this cd but I hear a sixties garage influence also, with the sometimes subdued guitars and the guitar lines or occasional (gasp) guitar solo. I like funny lyrics as much as the next fool but there’s pain, desperation and heartbreak in these tunes and if you think that’s corny well, I just say- that’s real life.

With people like Phil McCaffrey from the McGunks ( one of the best punk bands around) and Gary Traylor from Three Sheets on drums I would expect good things but they exceed my great expectations, by Dickens, and this is a band I’m proud to praise.

Staring at nothing/ Thinking what you said/ It’s all over/ Get used to it
Keeps me thinking/ All day drinking/ Makes me wonder/ Can I come up from under?
Aint’ Never Gonna Happen/ Ain’t Never Gonna Happen/ Ain’t Never Gonna Happen

That’s life staring you right in the whites of your eyes and hope and belief is just fading right in front of your eyes, your dead doll eyes- ain’t never gonna happen, It’s when you realize it’s dead and gone, get over it. But how does your heart still feel the pain and still exist?

I love how “Tell Me” starts with its mellow like they’re going to go into some, Creedence Clearwater Revival song, for chris’ sakes, and than it just explodes with Gary’s drums and they’re off!

You say, your way/ Well, I made a pretty mess of my life/
Come back and visit with some words of wisdom/ Tell me how to make it
Tell me how to make it/ Tell me how to make it right

I’ve got other favorites- “Irish Catholic Blues” “No Future” “Make It Better”- I’m a word man, I’m gonna talk about them but the music and beats kick ass just as well if not better than the lyrics. I hear traces of the Pixies, Tom Waits, and The Replacements on the edges of these songs. I also hear truth, passion, belief and disgust in its heart and I think that’s why I connect with this band and not with the bad, bland, evil life that lies around me. I just know for me, it just makes it better.
