- Boston’s punk and hardcore scene has a long history of producing bands whose purpose and commitment reverberate just as loud as their music. The Enemy Within takes up this tradition with their new album “As Long as I Can Walk I’ll Step out of Line.” With a straight-to-your-face, high intensity sound and lyrics that are simultaneously a call to action and a challenge to our assumed truths, TEW provides a soundtrack for standing toe-to-toe with the inner demons we all face and saying “not me, not today, no way”.
Featuring veterans of numerous Boston-based bands including Beware, Blood for Blood, and Milo’s Syndicate , The Enemy Within’s sound takes inspiration from their punk and hardcore predecessors, from Sheer Terror and Leeway to Black Flag and The Cro Mags. There are no tricks to hide behind in this music; just songs that make you shout along (Nightmare), songs to make you pump your fist (Spasms) and songs to tear down both the literal and metaphoric structures built around you (All This Will End). Reminiscent of 90s-era hardcore mixed with punk and modern influences, The Enemy Within takes pride in high-energy, interactive live performances that stay true to the cathartic, chaotic roots of the genre.
Sometimes things are not done right the first time. Sometimes getting older does not equate to moving on. Still other times there are things that just need to be said one more time. The Enemy Within acknowledges this and stands up to speak for all of those times. It has been said that normal people are not attracted to hardcore music. Whether it is because of scars from childhood, a chemical imbalance in the brain or a refusal to blindly accept what we are told, something inside of every fan of the music hints that we understand all too well the power and influence of The Enemy Within.
