The Furiousity – “All The Rage”

They say, “curiosity killed the cat” does that mean The Furiousity filled the fat? Besides the writer of that joke, what’s curious is how The Furiousity doesn’t fit easily in any genre. They have tons of energy that never subsides but they never take a step into hardcore. The aggressive but very good female vocals tend to eliminate punk as a style. You could call these guys, or gals, (four out of five of them are gals), “garage” but they have no sixties retro in them. You can toss around terms like punk, garage, rock ‘n’ roll and that’s fine; but they’re really just a fun, high energy rockin’ band.

Now, to me they resemble the Boston bands of the late seventies and eighties when we had hardly any true punk or hardcore bands but lots of garage and new wave type bands that still had a lot of grit and energy within them and were a ball to see live. I’ve seen these guys live, also, and they are a ball to see, as well.

As stated, the band consists of four girls and one boy, who is the rhythm guitarist. Ashley, the singer, has vocals that are melodic and pitch perfect; Nikki’s guitar is pointed and spiky as Sid Vicious’ hair (though not now, obviously) with a guitar tone that is sharp and brittle like the way guitarists sounded in the early days of punk, unlike the more fuzzed out crunch used more often today. And the rhythm section of Allie and Ida, romps behind them with an energy that if it isn’t always precise, never lacks for enthusiasm and passion.

This CD doesn’t totally catch the excitement of their live show but is a very good representation of it. I’d recommend checking them out, especially live. I like all seven tunes- Let’s check out a few.

“Land Mines,” explodes in your ears any way you step. It has stop and starts in the chorus followed by a melodic guitar lick that would feel right at home on a Buzzcocks album. Along with its high energy and background vocals in the verse, this won me over as my favorite track.

This song, “Lights Out,” is another energetic rush off a mountain cliff and shares the same title with my favorite Angry Samoans tune. This one has the band yelling the title in the chorus with Ashley answering with a haunting, “Wooh-oh-oh-oh-oh, “reminding me of Lene Lovich. (Who?) Also, extra points for mentioning Dairy Queen in the first lines of the lyrics.

“One Hit Wonder.” has the required energy boost, delectable lick and “Wooh, woohs” added just to spice up the dish. Kosta, the rhythm guitarist is slashing chords aggressively throughout and really pushes the song. And he does it very well for a boy!

“Face Value” is the last track on the CD and takes us out with another raucous romp through the rough, ragged realms of rock rife with rage. They furiously forge ahead to the finish with energy electrifying every ember. Enjoy!
