The Negans – “Somethang To Fear”

The Negans – “Somethang To Fear”

My name is Samm Gunn and I’m a private eye.

I take any case tossed my way, as long as there’s also cash being tossed my way along with it.

And that’s why I’m here today.

Seems the boys, Scumdog and Andy Blah have run into similar circumstances before when I’ve been called to step in.

I’m figuring during their two week vacation they partied, they misbehaved too much. So, it could be prison, detox, house arrest, fleeing the country? Your guess is as good as mine.

So my task at hand today is to investigate a new release by The Negans, a horror rock, punk and metal orchestra who are really a swingin’ set of cats according to Slimehog:

“The production, the playing, the writing is top notch…I would point other bands, how to do it right, towards this band.”

Oh, I almost forgot. Here’s some notes he jotted down about their new songs while he might have still been conscious.

I’m hoping lyrics like “Live by the bat, die by the bat,” should be taken metaphorically as I abhor violence. (Unless it’s directed towards Samm Gunn). But I’d say this song is more about bashing your ears with wonderful sounds. There’s a cool, fuzzy, Black Sabbath like riff that is met with a cool, Damned/Misfits like vocal. Plus, a Hendrix like guitar solo where the rhythm section kicks it up a notch to bring it to pure, musical nirvana. “Shit is going down!” And this is good shit.

“Look at you, you’re a badass,” and “Badass” is a badass song that rocks with a great, glitter/glam beat and a tremendous, guitar strum that recalls such great, glam rock bands as T.Rex, Slade and The Sweet to me. “Look at you and all the fucked up things you do.” There’s a breakdown part that head bangs magnificently and majestically and then trots along towards the finish with incredible energy and velocity to complete this very badass tune.

“Infested Fiesta” is my favorite song on this release. It starts with a flamenco burst of notes that soon move into a melodic punk gallop with some Spanish lyrics thrown in. (Like a cherry on top of a hot fudge sundae). This song is a mix of thrash metal, surf and flamenco. The metal/flamenco breakdown is unique, as I’m sure I’ve never written those words before, and I don’t expect to ever write them again. This is an original, effecting, emotionally excellent song.

“Armageddon Waves” is a surf rock, new wave, horror punk song. And I don’t expect to be writing those words again, anytime soon. This could be described as a collaboration between The Cult and The B-52’s. This song is one wild, roller coaster of a ride with a rip rockin’ beat and so much fun that one could drown in it with a smile on one’s face and no regrets.

As a private eye I work side by side with many unsavory, disreputable characters.

Pimps, prostitutes, second story men. Hop dealers, pill junkies, pushers, priests, politicians, pointillists and even the lowest of the low, musicians.

But no one is as depraved, degenerate and disgusting as these two low lifes- Suckdog and Andy Bile. And I have no qualms about letting them know how I feel about them.

I don’t flounce about like Slopdog with his inane jokes and insane imagery.

I tell it straight and true, though I might’ve had a few pops while doing my report. The Negans deliver the musical goods, mightily.

And though I believe everyone should get that shot of the vaccine for the covid virus, I’ve been taking my medicine, my shots of Jager nightly all along. And although I don’t believe it will keep me safe from the virus. It does seem to help me with the ailments and ills of the world and life.

The Negans provide an equal antidote, a musical remedy for the suffering and drudgery of all we go through.

They wrap it up in music and words that encapsulate punk, metal and horror rock along with something so potent and fierce that you might not want to meet up with it in a dark alley.

But this recording is so good that it should cause your worries to melt away.

Take it from a private eye who has been around. Take the vaccine shot. Hell, take a shot of Jager if you’re so inclined. Take a hit off this great release.

You’ve got nothing to fear.

(Samm Gunn)
