the pink parts – “ep”

Pink parts implies the soft parts, the one to attack for predators. Or maybe it suggests sticky valentines and love. Or maybe something more carnal, perhaps the use of pink parts?

Though I like their name and like the band a lot, I don’t think their name describes them completely.

It seems a bit soft, but they are willing to be true and vulnerable and have a music that’s open- for attack. I guess it’s a fitting name, after all.

This is female fronted punk rock/riot grrrl music that is equal parts original/traditional punk rock, say of X-Ray Spec and riot grrrl music of say, Bikini Kill. Either style is a winner for me and to have them combined is like pizza with beer. And the way this band plays their music is more than excellent.

I had to chuckle a little when I wrote that last line because if you’re hoping for technically amazing musicianship well; perhaps you should check out some old albums by Genesis or Yes and have yourself a technically amazing time, jerking it to musical masturbation- just leave me out of it.

For my money, my ears, my soul this is raw, true powerful music and if you’ve heard me rant on before how so few modern punk bands hit me hard and true enough to ring truly punk with my-oh, so delicate sensibilities- well, wallah! Like Bad Movies and few others this is one of the few, true punk bands I believe we cover.

This is honest, raw, passionate, energetic, rough stuff with great writing and wild playing. This is all the naughty parts, the real parts left in. But as the birds say, words are cheap, so if I can find out how to turn on this thing, let’s say you and I listen to their jams.

“Misandry” starts with the vocals bleating on the first beat, the guitars buzzin’ hard and everyone and everything in the universe colliding in courage and tenacity. “This is not random/ This is fuck’n’war.” This is a raw/war live/evil purge of emotion, passion and guts spitting out of the speakers with a slight pause at each eighth beat. This is a groovin’ pulsin’ onslaught of locomotive loco action. Towards the end a pulverizing bass part plays with an answering walloping drum passage. This is not random. This is a fucking great song!

“Countless Disses” starts with a guitar slashing a way through the brush for the song to ascend to life. The guitar continually bashes its head against the structure as the vocals answer it as the beat only pauses to signify a chorus born. I can’t make out too many lyrics of the song. Perhaps it is about countless disses, but I will only shower a thousand praises upon this great, gritty tune.

A few beats and a roller-coaster scream announce “Package” and its arrival. Then a rhythmic attack with an almost middle eastern drone with emotive vocals glide along. This is a churning, turning ball of emotion knocking down each bowling pin, a strike with each roll. Another, unslick, percolating point of punk passion aiming at the target and striking true.

“Power Vacuum” moves tentatively along with a rhythm that is choppy and groovin’, rhythmic changes shake it up, backup vocals add sure flavor. This song just happily bops along with lead vocals playing coy and then striking like a rattlesnake’s head with stinging emotion. A short guitar passage pops in towards the end before a crashing coda moves in for the kill and the finish of this killer song.

I’m gonna end my illustrious and industrious review with a pink parts video. Because I think seeing them live is what they’re all about- which is what all good bands are about BTW. (I was gonna use the word “essence” but then that sounds like “incense” and you’d think I’m all hippy-trippy, where, in reality, intent and intense is just a mere syllable away.

But this video shows us how they are, both musically and visually. Skinny, bearded drummer- bass player who looks like a big lug- short, spunky singer stranglin’ her guitar to death and music that borders on what could be, with the wrong turn- indie, experimental slush but they will have none of that detour.

This is spikey, spontaneous, cutting, sloppy, aggressive, expressive, chunky and challenging, spiteful and fiery and what adds up to me- the right recipe for what few bands know how to bake- that says all things punk do not even consider any other categories.

And this you can see they do well. Right before your very eyes.
