The Sewer Buddies – “Pizza Butt”

So, anyhoo, if you didn’t already know- The Sewer Buddies is a side project started by Lindsey Loogie Warnot- who is one of my punk daughters.

I want you to know that me and her mother, Courtney Love, could not be more proud of her.

And I’m sure that Lindsey would say the same about us, only because, I’m greatly delusional.

But the concept of this band is to have an on going collective, where musicians are free to come and go, with the idea to create punk music for small kids. Which fills a space and makes sense as a lot of classic punk was not written for very young ears. I would suggest to new parents to not expose their young children to the catalog of GG Allin, Fear and numerous others.

Lyrically, this EP has songs about playing in mud, making snowballs and destroying pizza carton boxes.

But the music is still some real, rip roarin’, rambunctious punk. Lotsa twist and turns in the arrangements. Lotsa high female vocals ‘ala Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spec. Lotsa fun and energy like The B-52’s have been known to spout out.

I just think the music is great. And since I have the mind of a child, it would appear that the lyrics were made with me in mind.

Let’s all go to recess and listen:

“Mud,” starts out unassuming for a few seconds, until the rhythm rushes into a full fury, hardcore beat with buzzing, bashing guitar. This song talks a lot about aliens, “Humans of the future, we’re the aliens,” but seems mostly about making noise and having fun. “Banging pots and pans! Noisy as we can. Come play mud.” Sounds like fun to me and sounds great to me, as well.

Get your mind out of the gutter, or the sewer, so it seems! “Snow Balls,” is not what you think it’s about! This is a record for kids, ‘fer Christsakes! Well, maybe it’s only my mind that’s there. With a snappy, Bo Didley tom-tom beat this song rolls out rockin’. “Not a circle, but I roll around. Roll and roll, till I’m done like dinner. The perfect snowball.” Then a more straight-ahead, charging punk beat intrudes with lyrics with what the song is really about. “It’s a snow day. Let off from School! …Panic for the parents, it’s our snow day. Snowballs, got snowballs. We rule the streets.” This song alternates between the punchy, aggressive verse and the driving thrust of the chorus. It ends with a neat little coda. “Roll and roll and rock ‘n roll. Roll and roll and rock’n’roll.” This song rocks, punks out and kicks ass and is my favorite song on the EP.

“The Pizza Song” is taken at a fast pace, punk approaching hardcore, with slashing, garage/punk chords. “Cows give milk. Farmer ages it to make, Ultra Sharp Cheddar!…This song is for cheese! Cheese rules! Cheese is so metal!” The song continues to praise cheese and pizza until the music stops and an ominous declaration is presented. “Hey, wait! This pizza box is empty!” What follows is a breakdown part which proclaims, “Death to the pizza box,” and sounds much Siouxsie Sioux (from The Banshees) fronting Black Sabbath. Then were into a double time thrash romp and a mash up of instruments that, I take as a musical metaphor for the pizza boxes that are now being ripped to shreds.

If one hears these songs and rejects them as trivial, I understand. I understand that you want angry, angst-ridden, aggressive metal hardcore that reinforces your miserableness. (That’s a joke! I fully support and enjoy much of that intense, worthy music.)

But remember, bands like the Angry Samoans and The Ramones and others were writing silly punk songs before most of you were born, with bands like The Queers continuing the tradition.

It’s kind of a tradition in punk, that seemed to solidify with the skate punk genre, that fun and funny can go along with some awesome music. And for me, that genre has some of the funniest, most fun and best punk around.

And making music to introduce kids to punk rock is not only a good idea but a noble one, as well.

Take this EP as a “gateway drug” into punk rock.

And if you can’t have a laugh and some fun while listening to music- Well, I feel sorry for ya.

Here- grab a slice. Have a beer or a toke or even some psychedelic mushrooms on your pizza. (But please, don’t go any harder than that.)

This EP is your “gateway music,” to something you’ll truly enjoy.

The fun will ensue immediately.
