TIJUANA SWEETHEART / FULL BODY ANCHOR / GIANT TARGET

So we’re here tonight to see the big comeback show of the sweethearts of Tijuana serenading the sour pusses of Boston once again. Seems the last time we saw these gals play, last summer, was the last time they played out. We, naturally, assumed incarceration was the cause of the lapse; but it would appear that marriages, engagements- little things like that, were the cause.
But first up tonight we’re treated to Giant Target filling in at the last moment, and we are gleeful indeed, as these guys sound great. They play punk with a twist and a sense of humor but I’d have to see them again to have a more decisive description. I do take notice of how good the drummer sounds and I’m informed that he is also the new drummer for Razors In The Night. We hope to see those boys back in action soon, as well. Anyways, they play a great set and I just know if my heart was a giant target this band would shoot an arrow straight through it! Check out their band profile here.
Ahem, sorry. I will try to be less geigh in the next part of the review which isn’t easy when you’re covering a band with Rice Edmonston as the singer. Only kidding, Rice is just comfortable in his own sexuality as he is in everybody’s else! Full Body Anchor consists of Rice on vocals (though he is also fabulous on drums) and his wife!!! Kristen on guitar, Dennis on bass, Kevin on drums and Adorable Amy also on guitar. They play a sort of hard hitting modern rock, kind of as if Indie had any balls. Oh, my! With Rice’s operatic wailing voice backed by Amy’s high backgrounds and the rhythm section kicking in, they pack a potent punch on tunes like “Drown Control” and “Sound Searching,” and are a delight to witness live. Then it’s time for the she-wolves to be unleashed as Tijuana Sweetheart take the stage. Informed by them that they had little practice before the gig, I never would’ve guessed by the way they play tonight. With drummer LoWreck’s boisterous bashing, Julie TwoTimes nimble bass guitar fingering, Keri’s hot metal guitar leads and Helen’s melodious voice that can turn into a snarling screech at the drop of a dime- they perform a tight, rockin’ set. They perform so well that if there was a magazine based on performance I’m sure they’d make the front cover. Too proficient for me to call them punk but too fast to be called mainstream rock; they play a mix of pop, punk, metal, garage and rock. They also play a mix of old tunes with a lot of new ones, as well, that will be coming out soon on a new release. What’s coming, sounded good, especially already released “Fall Out,” their first number tonight, and good to hear old favorites like “Sticks And Stones” and “Trash Candy,” once again. There was one more band to see but in my intoxicated state I disrobed and put on roller-skates and made my way down Comm Ave in the freezing January temperatures. You’d never guess what got frostbitten!
