Interview with The Spoilers

Interview with The Spoilers at the Rosebud (men’s room)

By Jim Slimedog

The Spoilers are my favorite Boston punk band. They consist of two gals- Chrissie (Vocals/Guitar) and Cindy (Drums) and two guys Chris (Guitar) and Kevo (Bass).

They’re my favorite because, more than any other band in Boston, they embody to me the original spirit of punk music circa 1977. The first time I saw them they reminded me of one of the best punk bands from that era, The Avengers, a San Francisco band.

What impressed me even more was when I mentioned this afterwards to them they said other people had told them this but they had themselves had not heard the Avengers music till after they were formed. Though they have the original spirit they are not a copycat, retro band but a modern punk band with many different influences. They have a fairly new cd called “Loaded to the Gunwales” that is loaded with great tunes.

Slimedog- How did you guys get started?

Chrissy- It was like ten years ago, we were bored.

Kevo- Chrissy and I went to high school together. We all knew each other.

(Chris slinks dejectedly toward the back of the bathroom stall as he was not in the original lineup).

Cindy- We got started ‘cause it’s cool to play music and I wanted to play in a band.

Slimedog- How about influences?

Chrissy (to someone coming into to use the bathroom) Be quiet we’re doing an interview right now.

Urinator- I gotta pee, I don’t give a fuck (laughter)

Chrissy- Influences? Rock’n’roll. Booze. Drinking.

Cindy (to Kevo) What was what you were into, death metal?

Kevo- Yeah, Tori Amos and Florida death metal. (Laughter).

Urinator- I’ll go right here, in the sink.

Chrissy- No, I can move out of the way.

Urinator two- I can finish my beer.

Urinator three- Alright, it’s a party now. Wooh!

Chrissy- Next question.

Slimedog- Next question, um…

Urinator four- Anyone using that stall?

Slimedog – The next question is anyone using that stall? Who writes the songs, man.

Chrissy- Mostly me, sometimes Chris comes up with a riff or Kevo has a riff or something.

Slimedog- And you write the lyrics.

Chrissy- I write the lyrics, yeah.

Slimedog to entering urinators- This is the interview room; it’s not the men’s room!

Slimedog-How did the gig in Brooklyn go?

Chrissy- We didn’t play in Brooklyn.

Slimedog- Did you cancel it or what?

Chris- We didn’t cancel it.

Chrissy- It got cancelled.

Chris- We didn’t cancel it. We don’t cancel shit.

Chris- And then Bob Dewiit came in.

Chrissy- Come in, Bob, come in.

Chris- Dewitt just whip it out, I’ll hold it.

Slimedog- Now is it true that two members of the band are brothers?

Chris- Brothers? You mean sisters.

Chrissy- Sisters.

Chris- No, no, it’s true. Me and Cindy are brothers. I’m sorry to let the cat out of the bad. (Someone meows).

Slimedog- Is it true that someone in the band is Slimedog’s imaginary girlfriend?

Chris- Say that again.

Chrissy- That’s creepy, that’s really creepy, that’s creepy.

Slimedog repeats the question.

Chris- It’s Kevo and I’m pretty jealous.

Slimedog – What’s the deal with guitar players, everyone’s the same except you’ve had like five guitar players?

Chrissy- No, we’ve had three, well…

Chris- Four.

Chrissy- We had one, originally and then we had Chris Fay fill in, no, it was James. Oh, Josh, but they played like, literally, played like two shows. He’s (referring to Chris) been in the band longer than anyone else has.

Cindy- Can we wrap this up, I’m getting really uncomfortable. (With the constant entrance of urinators).

Slimedog- How about the best gig?

Urinator- Is anybody in there?

Chrissy- Yeah, Phil’s in there, sorry.

Cindy- Cindy’s twenty fourth birthday party.

Chris- I wasn’t there. I believe it was good.

Slimedog- Why was it good?

Chrissy- “Cause she was wasted. (Laughter)

Kevo- And it was at the Skybar.

Chris- Oooh, the Skybar.

Slimedog- How about worst gig?

Chris- I don’t know

Cindy- Tonight. (Laughter).

Chrisyy- I don’t know, I have no idea.

Chris- Oh, we played a show where one of the band members for the other band we were playing with died, almost, that was kind of bad.

Chrissy- Well, that wasn’t at the show that was after.

Chris- I think it’s safe to say we haven’t had any bad gigs.

Slimedog- What’s the funniest thing that’s happened in the band besides…

Kevo- Probably being interviewed in the bathroom.

Slimedog- Besides being interviewed in the bathroom?

(Answer drowned out by a chorus of urinators).

Chrissy- Okay, one more, so we can get out of here. Pick a good one.

Slimedog- Who is most likely to become a serial killer in the band?

Chrissy- Kevo, he’s very quiet.

Chris- It’s always the quiet ones.

Judge this band by their live shows and cd and not how they interview in urinals and you can’t go wrong. Check out our links, videos and reviews of them also.
