Vicious Mistress Records – “Punk In The Streets Vol. 8”

As I’ve stated before, the only compilations we usually review are from a DIY punk based label out of Torrington, Connecticut and this is 117th, I mean, ninth compilation we’ve reviewed by them in the last nine years.

Yes, we’ve been around that long- Well, as a website. As people, Andy and I, though being very young at the time, both witnessed the Orville Brothers first airplane flight. Though we both somehow missed the first landing on the moon. Seems we were both a little bit- too spaced out. And as I’ve stated before I do have a Mistress or female Master that only punishes me when I rarely step out of line.

But I promise you I won’t punish you anymore with the details.

And though most of these bands they release are not from the New England/New York area- We make an exception for this small, locally based record company. The best one I know.

Let’s see how merciful they are with their servings today:

“Trust” by Tooth & Nail, a French punk band starts off all properly and orderly with chuggin’ power chords along a moderate rock beat. But soon the sonic sky space is smashed to smithereens as the vocals scream and the drummer applies a beat that’s equivalent to nails being driven into your head- But, that’s a good thing! This song is wild, energetic- a kind of high-powered punk/Oi. There’s a background chorus of “You Fucked Up!” But this song is pure passion and propulsive in its perfection.

“His Name Is Joe” by Attenant Sonore, another French band, rolls out with a hard rockin’ beat and melodic vocals but what draws my ears in, is the feeling that I’m listening to a lost Motorhead song. This tune has a breakdown part but is mainly a pile-driving, energy pulsed explosion of guts and fury.

“Flapjack Attack” another band from France. Ha!- I fooled ya, they’re from the Connecticut Riviera. Where the best New England punk bands grow wild and free and in abundance. Their song “Sinking Ship” starts out with a thrash metal like guitar that is met headlong, with growly, hardcore vocals that burn with aggression and anger. Towards the end it turns a bit more metal headbanding. A perfect amalgam of punk, metal and hardcore.

“Drip Feed” by Swedish band Hoaxed starts with some harmonic, guitar chord riffing building up tension with bursts of driven music and rolling drums along with yelping, emotion filled vocals. This song glides along such a wave of speed and excitement that it makes my brain want to explode in aural ecstasy.

The Car Bomb Parade has been written about several times on TNB. I just have to say they are, and have been, one of our favorite punk/hardcore bands from New York for quite a while. Their song, “The Americanist” has already been reviewed by us, so I’ll just cut and paste:

“Even if you fight, you will never win. This is what it’s like to be a human being. This song has a propulsive, thrash beat that sounds like a racehorse on methamphetamine. A throwback guitar splays great, psychedelic blues licks over the proceedings which consist of intense, hardcore vocals. A cool, spoken word part arises in the midst of this all. “America’s not a place to live in…I survive America in spite of what it wants for people like me.”

Vicious Mistress motto is:

“Our goal is to help bands get heard and get recognized! We are here to give bands a voice. Many bands are ignored because people want to promote the next mainstream bullshit. We want to keep it real, keep it punk and keep the scene alive.”

That sounds a lot like what our intentions have been as well, though add to that-to be utmost silliest at all times.

And, oh, to be as drunk as possible at all possible times.

I don’t know if Andy Bang has kept up his part of the bargain, but I know damn well that I’ve held up my end.

And I think Vicious Mistress has held up to, and exceeded in their part to their goal, as well.

Even though I still see no whipping marks on my backside.

Lots of great bands here and lots of good music. I suggest you ignore some of the nonsense spewed above and support this great record company and the great bands it promotes.

And as Nick Lowe sang, while the Orville brothers were making popcorn and flying aeroplanes-

“You have to be cruel to be kind.”
