Bring The Knife  – 6+ Song EP

Bring The Knife is metal rock band from Allston, MA. They play a unique brand of metal that is a direct result of the diverse musical talents embodied in each of it’s members. At the helm, on vocals, is the theatrical and always enthusiastic Duncan Wilder Johnson, who, during live performances, spends most of the time popping about off stage like a wild banshee, revving the crowd into a frenzy. On the guitar is Pattie “The Gimp”, who can make her guitar squeal and squeak in more ways than one would think is humanly possible. On bass is the very capable and ever head swirling Zay Dohse, who along with the very awesome drum work of Eman Pacheco, combine to produce the wildly energetic beats that are Bring The Knife’s trademark. If I was pressed into a comparison, I would have to say that Bring The Knife’s sound is somewhere as far left as “Black Sabbath” and as far right as “X”, with a bit of “Anthrax” thrown in the middle for good measure. In truth, I think Bring The Knife deserves it’s own genre that would more than likely be simply called, “Fun Metal”.

The EP starts out with the energetic straight ahead, anthem-ish tune, “At The End Of Days”. The song begins with a cool ominous guitar-bass combination that eventually morphs into a steady driving beat enabling Duncan to craft his foreboding tale of warning for all man-kind to hear; “…we’ll all be lost until we find a prayer, filled with anger til death … do something drastic or be destroyed … we live at the end of days…” Check out the cool video below:

The next tune is an upbeat, fun filled, metal ride trough the glue factory. Arguable my favorite tune on the EP, ‘Werewolf Fuckdown”, features some of Pattie’s most awesome guitar squeeks/solos and Duncan’s most entertaining vocalizations. “… one finds themselves in the midst of a, werewolf fuckdown … one finds themselves in the midst of a. shewolf ghosttown ……were-wolf…were-wolf…”, indeed. Here’s their video below:

I challenge everybody to say the title of the next tune aloud without spitting on yourself or others. It’s called “FTFTFTFTFTFTFTFT…..” There’s a cool guitar riff running through the tune reminiscent of Black Sabbath’s “Into The Void”. It comes off like a demonic fast paced hayride through hell, replete with ghouls and goblins compliments of Pattie’s dissonant “fuzzed out” guitar playing. “Breath in, breath out … GUITAR”, leads into the most awesome guitar work, which, in turn, leads into “… no control …” and then finally, you guessed it, “..ftftftftftft…”

The 4th song is a medieval thrashy bloodbath that goes by the name of, “Viking Skull Thrust”. Its starts out docile enough with Zay’s light bass tappings, but that doesn’t last very long as it soon builds into the usual frenzied mayhem Bring the Knife is noted for. The tune features some of the most excellent guitar riffs you’ll hear anywhere. And, of course, Duncan’s theatrical vocals are once again front and center.

Up next is “Thank You for Ripping Us Off” with a straight ahead driving beat wrapped around a cool guitar riff very reminiscent of the great LA band “X”. Pattie does a mean Billy Zoom, while Duncan anthem-izes the words with inflections John Doe and Excene would be proud of.

The last tune (there’s actually one more tune, the cleaned up version of “Werewolf Fuckdown”) I’ll be talking about is, “I Walk Through Flames Every Hour To Feel Free” (wow, that’s a mouthful). A devilish bit of funkiness, that starts out evil enough, replete with thundering drums and death vocals, but quickly turns into an  anthem-ic X-like tune with awesome heavy squeeling guitar riffs.
