Random Ideas – “We Met In The Womb”

Of all the female triplet bands I’ve reviewed, I’d have to say unequivocally, that Random Ideas is the best.

I’m not sure if they’re putting us on as I’m just about to put on my stove to make a lovely, spam and cottage cheese omelet.

But I do have two sisters who are identical twins and, as far as much to my knowledge, they have not recorded any music.

And I should point out that if you read our bio on our website, Andy claims that him and I were Siamese twins, separated at birth.

I can not vouch for this. I’ll stick with what Jim Morrison once said about his own birth. “I dunno, I don’t remember it. Perhaps I was having one of my blackouts.”

But I believe they are triplets. And what’s that you say? They are from China, Maine?

That I don’t believe! But looking it up, yes, that place exists and it’s true.

And listening to their release it is also true that these sisters created some great slammin’ punk/indi mix that is three times what I’ve come to expect from most three man bands.

There are great songs, great playing, great music and that is three good reasons why this is three times better than most of the material I receive.

As eighties schlockmeister, Lionel Ritchie, once sang- (And count your blessings if you have no (random) idea who I’m referencing-

“You’re once, twice, three times a lady. And I love you.” (From the hit smash “Three Times A Lady.)

Not so sure I’d go that far, but I would say I love their music almost as much as I hate their dad’s music. Yes, Lionel is indeed their father. I checked it out.

But now let’s check out their tunes:

“Monster” comes barreling out with some energetic, jungle drum beats and four slashing chords that rip hard into your ears. “You came back, been without a year and it’s been great, way better than it is right now that you’re here.” (Ouch!) “And I want you as far away as possible from me.” I think she’s giving you subtle hints dude! This song glides along in an awesome punk/indi groove with an angry, expressive attitude. Great energy, great hooks, great guitar interlude and a monstrously, wonderful tune.

With a unique, propulsive, rhythmic intro “Leave Me Alone” is another melodic, rockin’ song where, shall we say, the writer might not be overly pleased with her partner. “Don’t tell me what to do. I know what I’m supposed to. I’m just trying to make it through. But it’s really hard when I’m with you.”

There’s an excellent, driving rhythm section backing up some exciting, AC/DC like chords. “There’s so much that you don’t see. So just fuck off and let me be.” Again, with the subtle hints! There’s so much energy, excitement and melodic ecstasy in this song- just leave me alone, my ears are happy here.

“Love Is Love” starts with a solid, bouncing Bo Didley beat and tuneful lyrics flowing over it like a waterfall of sound. The music interlude in the middle of the song has more of a punk attack with an effective, one hit to the beat rhythm, while the second interlude comes in funky before it crashes into that righteously, rockin’ beat again. Then it ends with a nice prog rock outro. I love “Love Is Love.”

Starting with a three part acapella, “Transform” states- “It doesn’t matter what you are, what you wear, who you like. You need to be able to live your life. And if you can’t do that the way you were born. Don’t be afraid to transform.” Truer, words have never been written and I love the song title- “Transform.”

This song has great growly, guitar with choppin’ rhythms but more so it has such great lyrics. “He’s not a guy and she’s not a girl. They’re just saying that to please the world. What’s outside is not always in. Maybe he’s a she and she’s a him.”

The music is great but the lyrics will probably be the best I’ll hear all year. So right and true and so eloquently and poetically presented. People should be able to be and express who they feel they are. Because they are correct as they are the best one to know themselves. And this song is so great for expressing this.

I don’t know why a release as great as this has been sitting on my imaginary desk for so long.

But I’m glad I got to it and I believe, if you check them out, you will be as glad as me.

Maine doesn’t have a lot of punk bands, but from my experience in the last ten years, their bands have a different, unique aspect and are of high quality.

And what I hear outside my ears from this band is probably as great as what resides within all three of them.
