Sexcrement – “XXX Bargin Bin Vol 2”

Sexcrement is my favorite metal band.

Why, pray tell- should we listen to you? O, follower of all things punk? Who run-neth away with free-flowing bowels at the mere mention of metal.

While this is not an unwarranted accusation, in my defense, I must say, I’ve reviewed a couple of metal bands this year. Horrible Earth, Adrenachrome and have been praised by head headbanger Andy Bang in my industriousness.

But, admittedly, I have a somewhat warped view of metal. I mean, I grew up with glitter/glam that was followed by punk/new wave. So my favorite type of metal music is the eighties glam metal. And I probably relate to it so much because it is so heavily influenced by glam and punk. And I realize saying this to serious metal fans might be like saying to serious punk fans, I just dig Green Day and Blink 182.

But enough of your linguistic excrement, you say, what does this have to do with Sexcrement?

Well, if you have ever seen Sexrement live then you know what sets them apart as a metal band.

With a wild live show that includes strippers and other antics, for me this is the most fun band to see of any band, of any genre on our site.

And what puts me off about metal sometimes is the solemn seriousness of it all. I hate seeing shows where it looks like Mr. Freeze, a Batman villain, has just frozen everyone stiff with no one moving to the music at all.

I like music that is serious in intent but is also fun and lively and funny and encourages one to go wild.

Sexcrement brings the sex, the fun, the wildness of rock’n’roll back into metal with their live shows. And on this four song EP, though they don’t capture the spectacle of their live set, they do provide music of much substance and worth.

Lots of current influences in their music like the death metal vocals, but lots of hard rock and traditional metal influences as well.

This is metal I can sink my teeth into and what I bite, I find scrumptious. So, won’t you join me in a four-course tasty meal?

“Salt Peter” starts off with an energetic, industrial beat and screaming vocals alternating with low death vocals and ultimately, joining together in unison. Some cowbell and bass pulls pop in there but basically this is a relentless, rhythmic rant that recalls to me Marilyn Manson (another favorite of mine and a no-no in the serious metal world). I have no lyric sheet but for me this is a rockin’, groovin’ piece of wonderfulness and my favorite dish on the menu.

“We Die Young” starts out with some chuggin’ guitar and some psychotic high screaming vocals soon answered by some low blood-curdling ones. The rhythm slices and dices in an interesting but still grooving way. Soon an explosive guitar leads slips in spiraling the sound up into the Milky Way. This song is Motely Crue as a death metal band. This song is intense, headbangin’, rockin’ and marvelous.

“Streetwalker” starts with a charging rhythm and after a guttural growl, a unison black metal and death metal vocal explosion. The drummer rocks solid, the bassist lays sonic sustained slabs of sound, the guitarist let’s chords ring or lays down a snarling, irritated line. The rhythms clash like cars at a rotary only to pull out in a pure, strong stream until the confusion returns. Towards the end a simple hard rock line pulls this interesting song together as we march in its crazed, ecstatic oblivion.

“Heartbreaker” is indeed a Pat Benatar cover with vocals that alternate with low death vocals and high screaming (black) vocals. The rhythm section and guitars play fairly faithful to the original with maybe a bit more thrashy energy added. Vision of devils desecrating saintly milfs parade before my eyes while listening to this. This is a great version of a great song. The real low vocals replacing the original’s high piercing one is funny and this song is fun, as well.

In exciting news, Sexcrement will be the opening band on the next Heart/ Pat Benatar tour. Oh, if only I could write things and they became true!

But no need for imagining things while listening to this potent four song EP. Maybe this isn’t metal. Maybe this is true rock’n’roll, after all. ‘Cause it sure is fun and exciting just like the original rock’n’roll.

Sexcrement is my favorite metal band live and maybe, with this appetizer, they’ve become my favorite recorded one, also. The aromas entice, the flavors stimulate the palette and the mouth waters for anticipated delectable auditory delights.

And anybody in the metal camp who feel Sexcrement do not deserve to be there and need to be expelled…I’ll gladly claim them for the punk camp ’cause I think they have more punk attitude than some of the punk bands.

This is metal I can sink my teeth into, with a smile on my face, smacking my lips, as the blood drips off my chin.
