PHIL McCAFFERTY/FOLK GUY/OC45/THE McGUNKS at The Midway THE DOLL EYES/ DRAGO/ THE BLUE BLOODS/ THE WELCH BOYS at The Beachcomber 8/11 (Part 1)

The following is a live review that covers two shows on the same day. A late matinee show at The Midway Jamaica Plain, Ma that leads into a night show at The Beachcomber Quincy Ma. This is Thrash N Bangs first text review done by Jim Slimedog and Andy Bang. In an effort to make this event more exciting and ridiculous it was conducted while both participants were dangling from different parts of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. The following is the text review.

Slimedog- Are you secure enough on a railing? It’s quite windy today.

Bang- Yes, I‘m all ready.

Slimedog- I guess I should start. Paris is quite breathtaking even upside down.

Bang- Yes, I can see my house from here.

Slimedog- I was at the Midway before you, I saw Phil McCafferty’s (The Doll Eyes) solo acoustic set.

Bang- Cool, how was it?

Slimedog- Good, it was unusual for me to put in earplugs for a folk performance.

Bang- Did you recognize any of the songs?

Slimedog- Affirmative, he did “History” by The Doll Eyes, a McGunks song. Also, “Leaving On A Jet Plane.”

Bang- Cool, any idea why he did the folk thing?

Slimedog- Not really, it was good but that Peter, Paul and Mary song (Leaving On A Jet Plane) made me loose control of my bodily functions.

Bang- I’m glad I came a little late then (giving you cleanup time). I would have been very upset I missed the set had he played “Puff, The Magic Dragon.”

Slimedog- Next was a guy more likely to play that song; he was a real folk singer.

Bang- Oh, yah? Did he also have puppets? For some strange reason folk players remind me of puppeteers.

Slimedog- No, but I did find Midway owner, Dave, fondling a puppet in an inappropriate manner earlier that day.

Bang- Hmm, sounds a bit disturbing. I notice that he was also attempting to fondle Jenn (door lady) later on.

Slimedog- We can take a moment away from the puppet debauchery to mention Jenns (door person of the Midway) life’s dream.

Bang- Yes.

Slimedog- She aims to be Pauly Shore’s assistant in a contest, vote for her here: http://www.willworkforpauly.com/?p=356. She deserves it, take that how you want.

Slimedog- To finish with the folk guy; he performed quite well and was popular but until they invent thrash folk I won’t be interested.

Bang- Not sure what the Midway was thinking putting a couple of folk sets next to a couple of punk acts. Perhaps the idea was the punk guys would kill the folk people creating a sort of Texas Death Match kind of thing.

Slimedog- I see your point. I believe Jenn books these Saturday matinee shows.

Bang- Hmm, she told me she just liked punk. Perhaps the folk guys misrepresented themselves.

Slimedog- Well, you know that Phil was in The McGunks and I guess he likes the folk guy, and not in the manner of Dave with his puppets. So what ya think of these OC45 guys?

Bang- I thought they were way cool…Good, young talent. Phil and Matt (from The Scrapes) were digging them too.

Slimedog- At first I was appalled by the technical difficulties but when they did The Clash cover (Career Opportunities) I rejoiced with fervor.

Bang- Yes, and I nearly lost my bodily functions at that moment. Good thing I started to leave a change of clothes in my car.

Slimedog- Well said, indeed- something puppets need not worry about. What about the majestic McGunks?

Bang- I thought The McGunks were their usual majestic selves…very rockin’…very fun.

Slimedog- I have consistently said The McGunks are consistently great live. “Pretty Fucked Up” and “Three More Beers” are great songs. I think we have to end here. It’s so windy I dropped the cell phone. Someone else hanging here, doing reviews, just lent me his.

Bang- Yes, we can pick it up later.

Slimedog- I think part two should be at the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.

Bang- Cool…I’ll meet you over there.

Slimedog- Great, somewhere I know theirs a puppet meant for me.

Bang- Yah, you and me both.

Stay tuned for Part Two concerning The Beachcomber in Quincy, Ma. But conducted on the Leaning Tower of Pisa. As Abba would say, Mama Mia.
