Words Of Truth – “American Blood”

Words Of Truth is the name of this band and how little in life are words of truth around us!

In politics, it’s one team trying to make the other team look as bad as possible, no matter what they truly feel. In the corporate world, where once lying psychopaths gravitated towards organized crime, now they fit in, welcomed with open arms into the world of business.

The government lies, people in authority lie, your children blatantly lie to your face! No wonder we have pets, someone to tell us they love us and it’s not because we provide them with food and shelter- oh, no!

As a young man I noticed the only people who were telling the truth were a few singers in bands. Even those who were not my favorites like Bob Marley’s “Stand Up For Your Rights”- about forgetting about the great God in the sky and making your own life and John Lennon with “Working Class Hero”- “And you think you’re so clever and classless and free/ But you’re still fuckin’ peasants as far as I can see.”

I became a writer because of the words of truth my favorite writers were telling me, saying some things I thought but no one else would say. I believe in punk because one of it’s main ideals is truth- “Gimme Some Truth” by Generation X- but actually, it’s a song written by John Lennon.

The only genres of music that seem to put an important weight upon truth and realism in the lyrics are country, rap, blues and punk. Realism and truth is what I believe in and it’s something to believe in when you look around and see how little of it exists.

But in our local punk community it overflows with abundance and this band, “Words Of Truth” is worthy of their name. And not only do they have true, real lyrics that have true, real music to back it up. This is hardcore influenced by the heavy New York hardcore of bands like Agnostic Front, The Cro-Mags, but throws a bit of rock’n’roll beats and Oi in there as well.

And if I can shut up for a minute maybe we can listen to some tunes.

“Lifeless” starts out nothing likes it title, more like an engine revving before the Indy 500, or adrenaline building up in the runner’s veins before the gun shot signals the race. Once the drums kick in we’re into a steady, pulsing groove with only a second pause to admit the vocals into the manic mayhem. The guitars chop in an ominous, Motorhead like grind, the background vocals shout the title to answer the verse and everything moves on an escalator toward music heaven with jack hammer moves. Towards the end the rhythm changes to a straight ahead rock beat that makes the excitement peak before returning to the original beat. This song may be called “Lifeless” but is fun and is chock full of all that makes life worth living- guts, passion and truth- a great song!

“Forty hours of hell starts every day” starts off “American Blood.” The drums are pounding every beat, forty thousand times to each beat. The guitars are sustaining in growling aggression, the vocals spitting out its venom in rattlesnake bite poise. “Paying for a better way, working through my day to day.” A rock beat from the perfect precision rhythm section with pulverizing accents back up a vocal tirade for the working stiff. This song is hard, strong and true- this song combines power, intensity and force- this song is great.

“Kill A Dealer” has vocals charging in on the first beat after a four count by the drummer on his hi-hat. “With all your money you’re living large/ Heaven today, hell tomorrow.” The drums are stomping, the guitars are grinding and the vocals are emoting. This song reminds of a recent one by the Stray Bullets “Knife To The Pusherman.” Each one a declaration of war against the predatory drug dealer. “Kill A Dealer” is the unison vocal chorus until it kicks back into the verse. “I wanna kill,” the lead vocals sing and is answered by “A dealer.” A hardcore rush envelopes the vocals which bring us to a hard rockin’ beat for the chorus. “Got a common goal/ You sold your soul/ I wanna kill a dealer.” This song deals nothing but priceless music euphoria for such little cost.

Because not only is it great, but truth be told, this EP is being made available to raise funds for a forthcoming full length this summer.

So think how great that will be and you can have a helping hand in that coming to fruition.

Guts, passion, honesty, integrity, excitement- these are words I truly feel describe this band. These are words of truth for Words Of Truth. They deserve it and you deserve them, for real.
